What “processed in browser” means

  • Your file is never sent to a server.
  • The work happens only in your browser's memory.
  • Refreshing or closing the page discards the work in progress.
  • Files you download stay on your device.
  • Requests for ads and site resources are separate from your file — they never carry it.

Remove PDF Metadata — Clean Up Document Info

A PDF exported from a word processor carries the author's name, the account name, the program and version used, and the time it was made. That information travels with the file whether you meant it to or not.

Reading and rewriting the metadata happens entirely in your browser. Neither the original nor the result is transmitted.

Loading tool…

This tool clears the Document Info entries and the XMP metadata stream, and shows you exactly what was removed in a before-and-after table. It does not make a document anonymous — the exact scope, including what it cannot remove, is listed below.

How to use

  1. 1

    Choose your PDF

The current values stored in the document are read and shown next to each field.

  2. 2

    Choose what to clear

Tick the fields to remove: title, author, subject, keywords, creator, producer, creation date, modification date. Everything is selected by default.

  3. 3

    Run and review

When it finishes, compare the before and after values in the table and download the file.

Key features

  • Before-and-after table

See which values existed and which were cleared, field by field. Removal is spelled out in words, not only in colour.

  • Field-by-field control

Keep the creation date while clearing the author, or any other combination.

  • XMP stream removed too

Some programs write XMP metadata separately from Document Info; that stream is removed as well when present.

  • No overstated claims

We don't say “removes all personal information”. The page states exactly what this clears and what it leaves behind.

Limits of this tool

  • Removed: the Document Info entries and the XMP metadata stream.
  • Not removed: text typed into the page content, annotations and comments, embedded attachments, form field values, digital signatures, and identifying data inside embedded images.
  • Creation and modification dates can't be blanked entirely in the PDF format, so they are reset to 1970-01-01.
  • This does not anonymise a document. If the body text identifies the author, you need a separate review.

When to use it

  • Before sending externally

Clear internal author names and software details from a proposal or tender document.

  • Reusing a template

Strip the previous author's details when adapting an old document.

  • Publishing openly

Remove organisational details from a file you're putting on the web.

How are your files handled?

Reading and rewriting the metadata happens entirely in your browser. Neither the original nor the result is transmitted.

Selected files open only in your browser's memory, and results are handed straight to your device when you save. Close the tab and any remaining data is gone with it. See the Privacy Policy and File Retention Policy for details.

Remove Metadata FAQ

Does this make my document anonymous?
No. It clears Document Info fields. Names written in the body, annotations, attachments, and signatures all remain — which is why the scope is spelled out on this page.
How is this different from Edit Metadata?
Edit is for setting values to whatever you want; this is for clearing them. The before-and-after comparison and XMP removal are only here.
Can the dates be removed completely?
Some viewers expect the entry to exist, so they are reset to a baseline time. The real authoring time does not survive.
Does the page content change?
No. Pages are left alone; only document-level information is rewritten.
